Beamish Open Air Museum, near Stanley in North West Durham recreates northern life as it was in the early days of the century. There is a reconstructed town centre of authentic houses and shops, colliery village, railway station and a home Farm. So you can go into a pitman's cottage, explore a coalmine, watch the animals on the farm or even take a tram to the Victorian town and ride on the steam trains at Rowley Station.
Durham, which is dominated by it imposing cathedral is a delightful place to visit. You can wander the quaint cobbled streets and perhaps stop to have refreshments at one of the many waterside pubs and restaurants.
Newcastle has been redeveloped in recent years and boasts an impressive waterfront with first class restaurants, nightclubs and shop. On the outskirts of the city the famous Metro Centre provides incredible choice of shops and is one if the biggest shopping complexes in Europe.
Northumbria boasts over 80 golf courses, including championship course such as nearby Staley Hall. If you like fishing, there are also plenty of opportunities.
There is a strong historic element in Northumbria. Go back in time and sample medieval surroundings as you visit one of the many well maintained castles such as Alnwick or Warkworth
